Registration Deadline, Monday March 4. Debra Gash, a talented art quilter will be our March 20th speaker. Debra is a mixed media fiber artist whose work is characterized by cutting edge techniques, creative use of media, and non-linearity. She experiments with color, texture and dimensionality. Her heat-shaped fabric bowls were featured in the July 2005 issue of Sew News. She exhibits in the Michigan Quilt Artist Invitational and other venues. Debra is the daughter of Barbara Gash who wrote a fiber arts column for the Detroit Free Press for many years. Also, as a teenager, Debra worked at Robert Kidd's gallery. Her lecture on Thursday, "The Fiber Arts since the 70's: A Look Back and into the Future." will trace the way fiber arts have evolved over the last forty years or so. Which venues have grown, shrunk, or changed over the years with the introduction of new tools, materials, and mindsets. Debra's workshop will be on Tuesday, March 18 and Wednesday, March 19, preceding the lecture. This is a change from what has been previously announced. The board decided to change the dates because of the school break which starts on Friday and continues for the whole next week and is a time when many families vacation. The workshop title is Color on Non-Traditional Fiber Media, and here is Debra's description: "Explore what happens when paint and nontraditional fiber media such as Lutradur, stabilizers, fusible web, tissue paper, foam sheets, and even napkins are combined. Create one-of-a-kind fabrics and embellishments! The goal of this workshop is to experiment with a variety of coloring mediums on a selection of non-traditional materials. Your end products can be experimental elements that may be used in future projects, a simple sampler in the form of an accordion book or wall hanging, fabric beads, etc." Day 1: Color and heat distress kit materials; demos Day 2: Finish Day 1 samples; explore uses of stabilizers for image transfer Those of us who have taken other workshop from Debra will tell you that you will be using techniques that you have never heard of before. All fiber artists can use some of these techniques to enhance their work. The workshop fee will be $50.00, payable to MWG and there will be a $20.00 kit fee payable to Debra. The kit will contain samples of Lutradur, special napkins, foam, stabilizers, and other obscure paintables, use of paints, papers and tools. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SIGN UP IN ADVANCE. Debra is very organized and makes up wonderful kits for workshop participants, which takes time. (As a side note, she formerly taught Organizational Management at MSU.)
