Workshop
Debra Gash: Color on Non-Traditional Fiber Media
The workshop was great fun and we learned a number of interesting techniques that will lend themselves to various fiber art media. We did a lot of painting with textile paints—both full strength and thinned down. Some of the things we painted on were tissue paper, paper napkins, lollipop sticks, cellophane, various fusible webs, fun foam, and several different kinds of non-woven polyester textiles, similar to pellon interfacings. We did some screen printing, water color crayon coloring, stamping, burnishing, transferring, fusing and burning. Burning was done with a heat gun and with a soldering iron. It was amazing to see how the various materials reacted to the various treatments. One of the most interesting things we did was to draw with a glue gun onto a dish of water or a sheet of foil to make designs. Afterwards, we painted the glue designs. These could be applied to the surface of just about any piece.

Although we had no finished products, we finished the workshop with many ideas and samples to adapt and incorporate into our own fiber art work. Everyone agreed, whether their focus was weaving, felting or surface design, there were techniques and tips that we would all put to use.

These hand painted swatches are actually done on
thick, soft paper napkins. They can be cut up and
used in collage techniques.
