SEPTEMBER 2010 MEETING
NEW DAY-NEW TIME-NEW LOCATION
Please join us
“Weaving off the Floor
Saturday, September 25th, 2010
1:00-3:00 PM
Peace Lutheran Church
17029 West 13 Mile Road
Southfield, MI 48076-7749
Weaving doesn’t have to be done on a large loom. This meeting features many different types of weaving that can be done on your lap or on a table.
There will be many small looms of different types for you to try, and samples of what you can do with these looms. If you have any small looms that you are wondering how to use, bring them-someone will probably be able to help you figure them out.
There will be several types of potholder looms (with a twist), inkle looms, various table looms, weave-its, frame looms, a triangle loom, kumihimo, pin looms, card weaving and several more types.
Come and bring a fiber friend or two and some extra yarn from your “stash” for a fun afternoon of exploring Weaving Off The Floor.
Refreshments will be served.

Hi–we had fun at the art fair, although it wasn’t busy and wasn’t the type of place to really sell anything. We did attract some attention and handed out some info about our guild. Want to attach pix–we’ll see how it goes

I stopped at the BBAC this afternoon to see the Michigan Fine Arts Competition exhibit which is on display there until Friday. I was surprised with the number of fiber related pieces in this years exhibit. I have seen that show a number of years and I am not sure I have seen more than one fiber related item. Is it that more is being entered or did this juror have more of an affinity with this discipline.
Guild member Loretta Oliver had a felted item titled “Protecting the Border”
Former member Marilyn Prucka had a quilt,
there was a felted stole, a handwoven cloth with warp painting and ikat, a very abstract fiber piece with a steel base, handmade paper with embroidery, and another art quilt.
Quite an impressive showing.

Michigan Weavers Guild is planning a lecture honoring two of our long-time Members who have passed away recently. Margaret Windeknecht and Jean Brudzinski were both members of long standing and made very important contributions to our guild. Both were members of the rug study group which for years was an active component of MWG. Margaret served in several positions including President.Jean was the chair of the exhibit committee and worked hard to plan and carry out our exhibit schedules. Both were talented fiber artists and continued in spite of serious physical limitations that would have deterred most of us.
Margaret was also active in the Michigan League of Handweavers as teacher and participant. She became know nationally as a teacher and author with 25 publications including 10 books. She was known as an authority in Color and Weave techniques. More recently she became known for her miniatures.
Jean was a rug weaver until her medical problems made that impossible. She then took up paper strip weaving, producing beautiful wall pieces.
Margaret passed away on March 9, 2009 and Jean on June 12. It is a terrible loss for MWG and the fiber arts.
Contributions have been made to fund a memorial lecture honoring both of these people. A committee comprised of Ken Allen, Arlene Gendelman, Joan Koelsch, Laura Lipson, Loretta Oliver and Nancy Peck are working to bring this about.
We have arranged for Madelyn van der Hoogt to speak at a memorial Lecture on October 23, 2010 at the VistaTech Center at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. This event will be open to the public and we hope that there will be many people there.
We still need help with funding this event. If you have not yet made a conribution, but would like to do so, it is not too late. You may make your contribution via paypal or you may send your checks to:
